Breastfeeding, Cookies, and Flu Season: My Go-To Strategy for Protecting My Newborn

As a new mom, I’m constantly thinking about how to keep my newborn safe, especially during flu season. Newborns have developing immune systems, which makes them more susceptible to infections like the flu. Since babies under 6 months can’t get the flu vaccine, it’s up to us as parents to create a protective shield around them. Here’s how I’m protecting my baby from the flu right now, and how you can too!

6 Tips to Prevent the Flu in Your Newborn

  1. Get Your Flu Shot (and Encourage Others to Do the Same)
Since your baby can’t get vaccinated yet, make sure everyone around them—including you, your partner, and close family—is up-to-date on their flu shots.

  2. Practice Hand Hygiene Like a Pro
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your baby, especially after being outside, coughing, or sneezing. Encourage visitors to do the same.

  3. Keep Sick Visitors Away
Politely ask friends or family members who are feeling under the weather to postpone their visit.

  4. Limit Exposure to Crowds
Avoid crowded places like malls or large gatherings during flu season to reduce the risk of exposing your baby to germs.

  5. Breastfeed Whenever Possible
Breast milk is packed with antibodies that help boost your baby’s immune system and protect them from infections like the flu.

  6. Strengthen Your Immunity With Flu-Fighting Nutrients

While caring for your baby, don’t forget to take care of yourself! A strong immune system is your best defense against the flu. One of my go-to immunity-boosting drinks is a simple yet powerful concoction that’s easy to make and incredibly effective. Here’s how I prepare it:

 Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons honey (manuka is ideal)
  • ½ juiced lemon
  • A shaker full of ice

Combine the water, turmeric, cayenne, honey, and lemon juice. Chill until ready to drink, then shake with ice before serving. For an extra immunity boost, I love adding a pinch of grated ginger and a small clove of crushed garlic—it’s my secret weapon for staying healthy during flu season!

The Power of Breastfeeding During Flu Season

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to protect your newborn from the flu. Breast milk contains antibodies, especially immunoglobulin A (IgA), which forms a protective layer in your baby’s nose, throat, and digestive system. Plus, when you’re exposed to germs, your body produces antibodies that pass directly to your baby through breast milk—it’s like giving them a custom-made shield!

But let’s be real: breastfeeding isn’t always easy, and maintaining a healthy milk supply can be challenging. That’s where  Miracle Milkookies come in,lactation-friendly cookies packed with milk-boosting ingredients like oats, flaxseed, and brewer’s yeast. Not only do they help me produce more milk, but they also give me the energy I need to keep up with my little one.

How to Spot Flu Symptoms in Your Newborn

Even with the best precautions, it’s important to know the signs of the flu in babies. Keep an eye out for:

  •  Fever (100.4°F or higher)

  •  Coughing or sneezing

  •  Difficulty breathing

  •  Irritability or excessive fussiness

  •  Poor feeding or lethargy

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your pediatrician right away. Early intervention is key!

Flu season with a newborn can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies—like breastfeeding, good hygiene, and a little help from  Miracle Milkookies,  you can protect your baby and enjoy those precious moments together. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and flu-free season!
